Fantastic Fictions Symposium, and The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction

September 2002

From a university mailing list I discovered there was a talk on in the library about the history of science fiction. Justine Lera and Ben came along with me - we were the only three people in the audience apart from the Friends of the Library - to hear Justine Larbalestier talk about her new book, The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction. I promptly mailed Wesleyan asking for a review copy (the link above is to my review).

I went along to the book launch at Gleebooks, and then on the 27th there was a one-day Fantastic Fictions symposium (to which Mel and Amanda also came). Highlights were the keynote by Brian Attebery (on mythology) and presentations by Justine Larbalestier (on the book publishing industry), Scott Westerfield (on his involvement with a young adult series), and Wendy Pearson (on some Canadian "minority" speculative fiction). But mostly it was a chance to meet interesting people.
