Kyai Kebo Giro

Kyai Kebo Giro was started by Sarah Weiss in 1992: more history. It was based in the Department of Music and was a focus for undergraduate and graduate programs in Ethnomusicology; members were drawn largely from the student body of the University.

The repertoire of the ensemble was based on the Central Javanese classical instrumental and wayang or shadow puppet theatre traditions. The ensemble performed and premiered new pieces for gamelan written by Australian and Central Javanese composers.

Many members of Kyai Kebo Giro now perform with Langen Suka.
