Here is a simple help file to get you started using the gamelan e-mail list, or as a quick refresher.

There are two basic mail addresses associated with the gamelan e-mail list:

1. gamelan@dartmouth.edu

   Gamelan list address. Mail sent to this address is distributed to all of the subscribers on the list (as of Sep 1995, roughly 160 people). This distribution is done automatically by the Dartmouth listserv facility.

2. listserv@dartmouth.edu

   This is the address of the Dartmouth College listserv automatic mailing service which supports the gamelan e-mail list (through the generosity of the folks at Dartmouth). The listserv automatically processes all of the commands sent to this address.

   Commnands for the administration of the gamelan list, such as SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE, are sent to this address. To issue a command, just send it as a single line in the body (not subject) of a mail message to this address. Most of the commands you send will result in an acknowledgment and possibly some other information sent to you at your return e-mail address. Some example commands follow:

   SUBSCRIBE GAMELAN

   This command will add your e-mail address to the gamelan list. You'll start receiving any messages sent to the gamelan list address (in 1), above). is whatever name you are normally known by; don't include the angle brackets.

   INFO ?

   Get information on how to retrieve further information from the listserv about the listserv facility.

   UNSUBSCRIBE GAMELAN or SIGNOFF GAMELAN

   Deletes your name from the gamelan list.

   REVIEW GAMELAN

   Sends you information about the gamelan list.

   SET GAMELAN NOMAIL

   Tells the listserv to stop sending mail to your address. Useful for when you go on vacation and don't want mail piling up in your mailbox.

   SET GAMELAN MAIL

   To start receiving the gamelan mail again.

   INDEX GAMELAN

   To receive a list of the gamelan list-related files archived on the list server.

   GET GAMELAN

   To receive a copy of a gamelan list-related file from the list server archive.
